Since its founding in 1915, the AAUP has helped to shape American higher education by developing the standards and procedures that maintain quality in education and academic freedom in this country’s colleges and universities. The AAUP defines fundamental professional values and standards for higher education, advances the rights of academics, particularly as those rights pertain to academic freedom and shared governance, and promotes the interests of higher education teaching and research.

At UT we recognize the AAUP more than a dozen times in our faculty handbook. This recognition is the result of generations of faculty, staff, administration, and board working to foster academic freedom and shared governance on campus. Our advocacy chapter exists to promote these values on campus where they are strong, bolster them where they are weak, and fight for them where they are absent.

With numbers comes strength. If you would like to join us in this cause, consider becoming an active member of our national advocacy organization. Rates are affordable and varied based on your income. Monthly charges range from $6 to $25 and come with a bevy of  benefits  including access to expert knowledge, professional insurance programs, and discounts to a number of academic presses.

Regardless of whether you are a member of the national AAUP, ALL faculty are welcome at UT AAUP meetings, invited to use our services and contribute to our cause, and supported in their pursuit of academic freedom and shared governance.
